Habitat for Humanity

About: Habitat for Humanity of Greater Lowell builds, renovates and repairs simple, decent and affordable housing for people in need without discrimination.

Habitat's mission is to provide decent and affordable housing to families in need who would otherwise be forced by circumstances to live in substandard housing. Habitat for Humanity of Greater Lowell (HFHGL) works in partnership with corporations, like-minded community groups, faith-based organizations, and individual volunteers to develop communities for, and with, people in need by building and renovating simple, decent, energy efficient, affordable homes.

Habitat for Humanity of Greater Lowell (HFHGL) works to strengthen families and communities through affordable homeownership opportunities without regard to age, race, ethnicity or faith, specifically targeting individuals earning 25-60% of the average median community income. Our partner families are required to help build their home (sweat equity) as well as pay a mortgage (HFHGL provides a 0% mortgage).

Since its founding in 1991, HFHGL has built or renovated a total of 28 homes in Bedford, Billerica, Concord, Lowell, Reading, and Westford. Locally, HFHGL projects have placed almost 100 people into quality affordable homes. In addition, HFHGL has funded the construction of 45 homes globally through Habitat’s International Tithe program.

To date, HFHGL's largest completed project is the 3-duplex development, located at Harmony Way in Lowell.  HFHGL is currently nearing completion of a $2.4 million cul-de-sac neighborhood development in Bedford, MA and we plan to close on the 8th and final home in this location in November of 2012.  In 2013 HFHGL will be back in Lowell building 4 homes.  HFHGL's 2012-13 Strategic Plan formally expands both the mission and the impact of Habitat beyond building homes exclusively and into the realm of helping families in need, particularly low-income, elderly and veteran families throughout Greater Lowell.

Opened in June 2012, Habitat’s ReStore sells new and gently used items to the public. All items are donated to the ReStore and are a tax deductible contribution. Once cleaned and priced, the items are then sold to the public at steeply discounted prices. Whenever possible, appropriate items are set aside for the construction of Habitat homes. Income from the ReStore generates funding to build more homes.

Why a ReStore?

All funds raised by the ReStore provide direct support of Habitat for Humanity’s mission of providing simple, decent, affordable housing in the community.  You can help!

ReStore’s mission is to:

– Generate funds to build more affordable homes in the Greater Lowell area, incorporating our Christian based principles and allowing more hard-working, low-income families in the community the chance of homeownership.

– Provide new and gently used home improvement materials and household goods and appliances at affordable prices to people of all income levels.

– Be Green! By keeping useable building materials, home improvement products and appliances out of local landfills saving valuable space, time and money.
