Dear MRT Community,

We have had a joyous first week of rehearsal for The Rise and Fall of Holly Fudge by Trista Baldwin; a MRT world premiere and commission. Rehearsing comedies are energy producing. Artists leave the room lighter, more connected, and restored. As Milton Berle said, "Laughter is an instant vacation." We are ever excited to share this story and feeling with all of you in the coming weeks in our beloved Liberty Hall.

In Service,

Christmas 2020. Carol is a hard-working single mother who makes award-winning "Holly" fudge, named after her daughter. She serves it every holiday. She gifts it to her friends and co-workers. She's determined that this year won't be any different, even if she has to wear a mask while whipping up her famous dessert. But with her daughter Holly's girlfriend crashing Christmas, her neighbor's new-found love of confectionery, and the protests erupting on her front lawn, Carol is finding it tough to make this the most wonderful time of year.

VICHET CHUM Vichet made this year's "50 Cambodian Writers." He tweeted: "Honored to be on this list of incredible Cambodian writers, some I’ve read and adored, and some I’m excited to familiarize myself with. I’m grateful to be repping for theater!"

INSTITUTE OF CONTEMPORARY ART Check out the new Deana Lawson exhibit opening today at ICA. Lawson has been investigating and challenging conventional representations of Black life through a wide spectrum of photographic languages. Details.

THEATRE NOW Teresa Eyring, Executive Director and CEO of Theatre Communications Group, walks us through how the performing arts are adapting to this new world, including anemic ticket sales and shortages in working capital. Asking artists during the shutdown what they want to change yielded new ideas about collective leadership, holistic support, hybrids of live and virtual programming, and how to promote artists as problem solvers.
